We are currently seeking applications for the following positions:

Literacy and Learning - Children's Support Volunteer

Literacy and Learning Children's Support Volunteers assist Library staff in the preparation and delivery of the Library's Children's programs and events for families with children at the City of Charles Sturt.

We are seeking a volunteer to assist us with the Little Bang Discovery Club preschool science program on a regular fortnightly roster at our West Lakes or Hindmarsh Libraries (venue changes throughout the term), Thursdays 9:30 am to 12 noon.

If you are available fortnightly on a Thursday morning and believe you have the following we would love to hear from you:

  • A DHS Working with Children Check or the willingness to undergo one
  • Good communication skills
  • Demonstrated reliability and ability to commit to a fortnightly roster
  • Passion and enthusiasm for working with children and their families
  • Patience, understanding and tolerance for cultural and varied backgrounds

Home Gardening Volunteer (CHSP)

Home Gardening Volunteers undertake basic gardening maintenance for Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) eligible clients of the City of Charles Sturt which complement the services provided by the Home Maintenance and Security Team.

The City of Charles Sturt is currently seeking multiple volunteers to assist with our Home Gardening Program.  We require volunteers a weekly schedule to cover various shifts as per the following:

  • 9 am to 12 noon Tuesday
  • 9 am to 12 noon Wednesday
  • 9 am to 12 noon Thursday

Please note you do not need to be available for all the shifts.

This role requires a DHS Aged Care, and Disability Services screenings, or the willingness to undergo and obtain these (the Council will do this for the successful applicants).

If you believe you have the following, we would love to hear from you:

  • A background or interest in gardening.
  • A reasonable degree of fitness for gardening, including but not limited to pruning and rubbish removal.
  • Current Driver's License
  • Willingness to drive and reverse a council vehicle with trailer
  • Good communication skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability.
  • Genuine interest in frail aged and people with disabilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion.
  • Patience, understanding and tolerance for cultural and varied backgrounds.

Kitchen Hand and Social Support Volunteer

The kitchen hand and social support volunteer will assist clients to interact in social activities and support staff with meal provision and clean up in a centre based Social Support Program catering for the frail aged and/or persons with a disability.

The City of Charles Sturt is currently seeking multiple volunteers to assist with our programs based at Arch Paterson Centre located at 64 Blight Street, Ridleyton.  We require volunteers on a weekly schedule to cover various shifts as per the following:

  • 8:30 am to 12:30pm Wednesday
  • 10am to 2:30pm Thursday
  • 8:30am to 12:30pm Friday

If you are available for any of these schedules and believe you have the following we would love to hear from you:

  • An interest in cooking
  • Good communication skills
  • Demonstrated reliability
  • Passion and enthusiasm for working with frail aged and/or those with a disability

Gardener - Community Spaces

Home Gardening Volunteers undertake basic gardening tasks and maintenance for areas of Community Open Space.

The City of Charles Sturt is currently seeking multiple volunteers to assist with the following Community Open Space:

  • Henley Well-being Space
  • Beachway Reserve Bee Garden
  • Alton Reserve Butterfly Garden
  • Pennington Gardens Reserve

The location and schedule of the volunteer role will be negotiated with the successful applicants.

If you believe that you have the following, we would love to hear from you:

  • Demonstrated reliability
  • Experience in gardening – desirable
  • Being able to follow instructions and work within boundaries
  • Able to work independently
  • Able to make a time commitment of at least 4 hours per month

Digital Literacy Volunteers

Digital Literacy Volunteers provide assistance and help build the confidence of community members to safely navigate a device, learn a new digital skill and connect online. Assistance is provided as either one-on-one or in small groups.

The City of Charles Sturt is currently seeking multiple volunteers to assist with providing one- on-one digital assistance for community members who currently access our mobile library lending service.

We require volunteers who are available to deliver digital support on the Mobile Library. This will be on a structured schedule, to coincide with when the Mobile will be stationed at the following stops:

  • Tuesdays – Welland Shopping Centre
  • Wednesdays – Bartley Terrace Shopping Centre – West Lakes Shore
  • Wednesdays – Bower Cottages Community Centre
  • Thursdays – Fulham Gardens Shopping Centre – Tapleys Hill Road
  • Fridays – Ridleyton Shopping Centre
  • Fridays – Plant 4, Bowden

The Mobile Library is staffed at all times by a dedicated Library Outreach employee, and this volunteer will not be assisting customers in isolation at the Mobile Stop. The volunteer role will report to the Libraries Digital Literacy Officer who will support the volunteer with the specific service they are providing.

If you believe you have the following skills we would love to hear from you:

  • Excellent communication skills – including good listening skills and the ability to show patience.
  • Current computing skills – including knowledge of a variety of mobile devices (laptops, smart phones, tablets), platforms (Apple, Android, Windows) and desktop PCs.
  • Current knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of desktop applications, social media, email and internet browsing.
  • Demonstrated reliability and the ability to work independently.
  • Personable and enjoy helping customers of all ages and all demographics (children and adults)
  • Be patient, understanding and tolerant of cultural and varied backgrounds
  • Be able to drive your own vehicle or use public transport to attend the library/ outreach location in a timely manner.

As part of the recruitment process, all applicants will be invited to an information session to discuss the role.  This will be held at 11 am Monday 16 March at the Civic Centre, 72 Woodville Road.  You will get a confirmation to attend this information session however if you are applying, please put a save the date in your diary.

Community Visitors

Do you enjoy meeting new people? Community Visitors share companionship and friendship with a socially isolated person in a residential facility. The program enhances the person's social and community involvement.

Community Visitors are required to visit a selected resident on a regular basis. This could be weekly, fortnightly or monthly, at a time that suits both the volunteer and the resident.

Where appropriate, suitable volunteers will be matched by the coordinator of the program to a resident with similar interests and life experiences.
