Recycling batteries and mobile phones

Update - July 2023

Our libraries and community centres have been recycling batteries and mobile phones successfully for the past few years.

With this service being very popular with our community, we have decided to expand this service by introducing one simple collection bin for both batteries and mobile phone disposal.

The next time you visit your local library or community centre, please look out for the large green bin below.

Please note, due to safety concerns the bins do need to remain locked when not in use, so staff will need to help dispose of your items.

Batteries can be hazardous if disposed of incorrectly in your general waste bin and can cause significant harm to the environment.

Our five library locations and five of our Community Centres are equipped as collection points for the safe recycling of domestic batteries.

Collection points

Batteries and other items you can recycle in the bins with us include:

  • Cell-type batteries (AA, AAA, C and D)
  • Button batteries from calculators, watches and many toys
  • 9-volt batteries
  • Mobile phone batteries
  • Small rechargeable batteries from cameras, cordless phones, shavers and some power tools
  • Unwanted mobile phones.

Look for our collection bins and ask your friendly Library or Community Centre staff for assistance. Help us protect our local environment for generations to come.

Please be aware we are not able to accept any alkaline or Lithium batteries that are leaking , swollen, or damaged in any way. These can be returned to the Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre located at 181 Morphett Rd, North Plympton.
