Social Media Use

Our social media channels help us connect with our community, share information and encourage open discussion. We welcome your participation and ask everyone to communicate with courtesy, respect and honesty.

Use of and participation in our social media channels is taken as acceptance of our guidelines and our Media, Communications and Social Media Policy.

The City of Charles Sturt does not endorse or accept responsibility for content posted by third parties.

Keep it respectful and on topic

We encourage conversation and debate, but comments should be relevant to the discussion and respectful of others.

We may remove or report content that:

  • is offensive, abusive, violent, hateful, discriminatory, threatening or harassing
  • is defamatory, knowingly false, inaccurate or misleading
  • targets or disparages individual staff members, Elected Members or other people
  • contains sexually explicit material
  • infringes copyright, intellectual property or privacy
  • contains spam, advertising, commercial or personal solicitations, crowdfunding or potentially harmful links or files
  • is deliberately disruptive, trolling or unrelated to the original discussion
  • repeatedly raises a complaint or topic that Council has already addressed.

Protect your privacy

Social media is a public forum. Please don't post personal, private or confidential information about yourself or others.

You are responsible for your comments, username and any information you choose to share.

How we respond

Our staff will assist with questions where we can. Some matters cannot appropriately be handled through social media because of their complexity, privacy or the information required.

If we ask you to continue a matter through another Council channel, we may cease discussing that matter on social media.

We aim to respond promptly, but our social media channels are not monitored 24/7.

Moderation

Content that doesn't meet these guidelines may be removed or reported.

Where someone repeatedly breaches these guidelines, we may issue a warning and/or block or ban the account. Serious breaches may result in an account being blocked without warning.

Being blocked from a social media channel does not prevent you from contacting Council through our other channels.

We may also restrict public commenting on individual posts where appropriate.

Transparency

Transparency is an important part of all social media communication.

Charles Sturt will not create online communications designed to mislead the community or control a conversation.

Every platform and channel hosted by Charles Sturt will clearly state its ownership. It will be monitored as per internal protocols to track and monitor our online presence.

Spokespeople using social media in an official capacity must disclose to the community their identity (name) when associating with the public online.

Privacy

Protection of our community’s privacy as a collective and individually is very important. This means we need to be conscientious regarding any identifying information that we collect via our communications platforms, including how we store, use or share that information in line with Council’s Privacy Policy.
