X-Ray Recycling Service at City of Charles Sturt
We’re excited to announce that our X-Ray recycling options have expanded across more of our City’s libraries and community centres - as part of a two-year trial initiative.
Locations where you can now recycle X-Rays with us
As part of this trial initiative, we now have new X-ray Bays at Woodville (Civic) Library, Ngutungka West Lakes, Ngutungka Henley and Bower Cottages Community Centre.
These add to our existing X-Ray recycle bins (part of the Hard-to-Recycle Stations at 19 on Green and Hindmarsh Library) - making it easier than ever for residents to safely recycle old medical x-rays.
This free service, delivered in partnership with Ecocycle, helps divert waste from landfill and recover valuable materials like silver and plastic for reuse.
Why Recycle X-Rays?
Recycling x-rays:
- Saves resources by recovering silver and plastic
- Gives old x-rays a new life as everyday products
- Reduces landfill and chemical pollution
What Can Go in the X-Ray Bays?
✅ Medical x-ray films only
❌ No envelopes, paperwork, general recycling or rubbish
If the bin is full, please speak with staff.
How Are X-Rays Recycled?
X-rays are processed by Ecocycle, where:
- Silver is extracted through a chemical and electrolytic process
- Plastic film is recycled into items like shampoo bottles and clothing fibres
- Read more about the process here.
This initiative continues the work of the Hard-To-Recycle Stations project, led by Dave Glazbrook at Sustainable West, in collaboration with the City of Charles Sturt.
