Justice of the Peace

The City of Charles Sturt provides free Justice of the Peace (JP) services at selected libraries, community centres and Civic Centre at certain days and times of the week.

Our JPs are volunteers so times are subject to their availability. Please make sure to check the below calendar for all locations and times. The calendar is updated daily with any cancellations or changes to the service so you no longer need to call us on the day to confirm availability.

What services can they provide?

A JP has the authority to act as an independent and objective witness to documents that are used for official or legal purposes. This can include statutory declarations, affidavits, divorce documents, power of attorney and guardianship documents as well as certifying copies of original documents.

As our JP service is quite popular, we do recommend that you:

  • arrive early and at least 30 minutes prior to the end of the session. The JP may not be able to stay past the finishing time to assist you.
  • bring appropriate ID (driver's licence, proof of age, passport, student card, etc)  as some documents may require the JP to confirm your identity.
  • ensure that you have the original documents in order to have copies certified.
  • bring a debit/credit card if you are attending our library locations and need photocopying done. We only accept EFTPOS payments.

You can locate alternative JP services using the Justice of the Peace search. This allows you to search for a Justice of the Peace by name, suburb and languages (other than English) spoken.

If you are unable to physically attend a specific location, some JPs will make home visits on request. Requests for home visits can be made using the Justice of the Peace search function on the Attorney-General’s Department website.
