Community Emissions Reduction

Towards a low emissions city

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our community is everyone’s responsibility.

We can all take action through our day to day activities, work places, at home and with others to reduce the impact on our climate. Actions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions can also save you money, improve your surrounding environment, support our local economy and connect community.

Climate Change Fact Sheet

Understanding where our community greenhouse gas emissions are coming from is important to identify where they can be reduced.

Our Charles Sturt community, including residents, businesses, industry, community groups and visitors are already doing a lot to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but want to do more based on our survey results.

The community, with support from Council are developing a Community Emissions Reduction Action Plan for the City of Charles Sturt. This stakeholder Action Plan is being drafted and will be provided to community for feedback later in the year.

More Information

We will be holding information sessions, workshops and webinars to support our community to take climate action. Keep an eye out on our social media pages and our events page to find out more.

You can also attend or watch replays from the 2023 AdaptWest Sustainable Homes Expert Webinars.

Some of the action our community can take is highlighted under the headings below.

Are you thinking of going all electric at home?

See our 'electrify everything' transition plan and visit the websites below for more information and inspiration.

You could borrow a do-it-yourself Home Energy Toolkit from our library catalogue and complete a home energy audit. The toolkit’s simple step-by-step process will help you understand and reduce your household’s energy consumption.

Fact Sheets

Residents and businesses can have a significant impact on emissions reduction by reconsidering the way they travel.

Consider alternative methods such as public transport (visit the Adelaide Metro website for service information), walking, cycling, e-bikes or e-scooters. Electric vehicles are also growing in popularity and can significantly reduce transport emissions.

Fact Sheet

Understanding that materials and resources are finite, and some will never break down in the environment, encourages the global trend towards a ’Circular Economy’ and being more mindful of our waste management practices.

Council’s waste services support a circular economy but we need everyone to use the correct bins. Did you know that when organic matter breaks down in land fill it releases significantly more greenhouse gas emissions than if it is composted through the FOGO (green) bin process Council uses.

Get your free kitchen caddy and compostable bags from our libraries and Civic Centre or fill out a form to have it delivered to you.

Fact Sheet

Trees and vegetation work to cool our environment and reduce carbon emissions in our atmosphere.

You can help green our neighbourhood in various ways, such as joining a local community garden, participating in the Grow it Local program, maintaining your verge or planting trees on your property.

Council also has a number of programs to support community members to plant more trees and plants including our 10 Plants for $10 Offer around April/May each year, and our 10 verge plants for $10 in October.

Services and programs to support community emissions reductions

Residents and businesses can support emissions reduction through small routine changes to their lifestyle, including growing food, reducing meat consumption, driving less, shopping conscientiously and using less water and energy around the home.
