October 2022 - Progress at Breakout Creek
Since construction on Breakout Creek began, we have been working on both sides of the river in some very wet conditions. The wet weather slows the work down because when the ground is too slippery, it becomes unsafe for many construction activities to take place. Works have included new paths, the building of retaining walls, the removal of old infrastructure, the removal of non-native and invasive plants, creating the new wetlands. Visit Green Adelaide for more information and images of the works in action.
August 2022 - Detours Advised as Construction Continues
From Monday 1 August, the southern and northern sides of the River Torrens Linear Park Trail will be temporarily closed between Seaview and Tapleys Hill Roads. This is to enable our continuing work as construction partner for the Breakout Creek Stage 3 Redevelopment.
Detours via nearby side streets will be in place, as per on-site signage. As works progress, we will keep the local community updated on when the sections of path will reopen. For more details please read the full Detour Map.
February 2022 - Construction Begins at Breakout Creek
Construction work has begun at Breakout Creek to transform it into a new community space and a healthier, more natural creek.
Green Adelaide water engineer Dr Nadine Kelly said it was an exciting step in the project.
“The project will create a new habitat for plants and animals as well as new wetlands that will improve the water quality of the river by filtering stormwater before it enters the river system,” Dr Kelly said.
“We are opening up 15 hectares of currently fenced-off land, for the community to enjoy, removing weeds and planting 215,000 new native plants."
July 2021 - Breakout Creek Designs Finalised
Final designs to complete a 30-year redevelopment of Breakout Creek along the River Torrens/Karrawirra Pari, which will boost wildlife and create jobs, have been released.
Mayor Angela Evans said the redevelopment will form the jewel in the crown of the rehabilitation and restoration of Adelaide's iconic urban waterway, the River Torrens/Karrawirra parri.
“The delivery of this project will further connect people to nature, provide significant biodiversity improvements and more than 200,000 plants will be planted into this area”, she said.
