Hindmarsh Residents Association Community Archive: Local History Group
We acknowledge that we meet on the traditional country of the Kaurna people, with a history of 65,000 years. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We are grateful for the ongoing support we have received from Kaurna elder, Uncle Dr. Lewis Yarlupurka O’Brien AO.
The group preserves the stories and collective action of the people of the old Town of Hindmarsh: Hindmarsh, Bowden, Brompton, Croydon, West Hindmarsh, Ridleyton, and Renown Park.
They run three activities the public can join:
- Sorting and indexing the Hindmarsh Residents Group (HRA) Archive which covers the 30 years from 1970 to 2000. The archive preserves the record of actions local people took to stop demolition of homes and destruction of community. Under the proposed freeway system (MATS Plan) the area was to be flattened. This was followed by the creation of innovative housing and community organisations making it the rich area it is today.
- Building oral history by recording the life stories of current older residents. Aiming to prevent this People’s History being lost.
- Each year they host an event in the South Australian History Festival. In 2024, they launched the book “The Recollections Collection” by Karen Joyce and Colin Ball. A book of stories shared by local people that span back a 100 years, originally published in The Hindmarsh Pughole community newspaper. Published by Wakefield Press, available for purchase @ $29.95.
