Our Weekly Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) collection trial is commencing from Tuesday 2 May 2023.
For the next 12 months, 1,000 households in Seaton and Tennyson will make a change in the way their own household waste and recycling is collected and processed by making sustainable decisions.
Trial households will have weekly FOGO (green lid) bin collections, with their general waste bin changing to a fortnightly collection on alternating weeks to the recycling bin collection.
In the City of Charles Sturt, around 45-54% of material in the landfill bin (blue lid) could be going into the FOGO bin (green lid). With weekly FOGO collections, we expect to see many benefits including:
- Increasing food waste recycling rates with food going into the FOGO (green lid) bin for recycling, rather than the landfill bin (blue lid).
- Reducing associated landfill greenhouse gas emissions.
- Supporting the local circular economy through the processing and return of nutrient rich compost back to South Australian soils.
- Providing an additional 240L capacity for FOGO, which is especially useful for those with larger gardens.
- Reducing associated smell from the FOGO bin by collecting them weekly.
Residents in these trial areas have now all received their starter kit with their new collection calendar, a kitchen caddy and compostable bags to help them recycle more food waste during this trial.
Our trial will provide important data on waste diverted from landfill and rates of contamination. This information will provide insights into how a FOGO collection service could be implemented across the City of Charles Sturt in the future.
We thank Green Industries South Australia for enabling this trial through their funding.
