Plans have been endorsed for the Military Road and Main Street Upgrade at Henley Beach.
The Military Road and Main Street Upgrade will revitalise the streetscapes of Main Street (between Seaview Road and East Terrace) and Military Road (between North and South Street). We also hope to transform the western end of Main Street into a public plaza, subject to receiving a “Places for People” grant from the State Government.
Traditionally roads are replaced like-for-like, but this project reviews and sees opportunity in the entire road reserve, delivering a landscaped streetscape for people, while still providing access for vehicles and public transport.
Key features of the project include:
- Opportunity for green verges, additional trees and wide paths by relocating the kerbs.
- Innovative raised intersection treatments that slow drivers along the entire length of road, as well as improving safety at intersections.
- Priority to pedestrians with multiple crossing points and riders able to share the wide paths as well as the slow travel lanes.
- Undergrounding of power lines to improve amenity.
The project will reduce urban heat, improve road user safety and access, encourage active transport, enhance amenity, improve the public realm and increase community participation, all while delivering high quality streetscapes.
Construction is due to commence in April 2021.
