Aquatic Activities

Approved events that use West Lakes lake require an aquatic activities permit to allow the use of motorised support vessels in the case of emergencies.

Permission is granted under Council’s By-Law No. 3 Local Government Land which prohibits the use of motorised vessels in West Lakes without prior approval.

Activities requiring approval can include:

  • canoeing
  • dragon boating
  • triathlons
  • swimming

There is a non-refundable Application Fee of $55 which must be paid upon submission of your application.

As a requirement of the permit conditions, at a minimum motor driven safety vessels must be provided during regattas and other organised activities under this permit.

The safety vessel must be capable of quickly reacting to any emergency situation. The safety vessel must be currently registered as a recreational vessel with Transport SA. The driver of the vessel must hold a current South Australian Motorboat Drivers License or equivalent. The maximum sized motor allowed is between 50-60ph.

Please supply the following information with your application:

  • Certificate of Currency showing a minimum ten million dollars ($10,000,000) Public Liability Insurance. 
    Note: Tax invoices are not considered sufficient evidence of a Public Liability Insurance Policy.

Applications will be considered within 5 business days from the date that all required information has been lodged with the Council.

The assessment process happens within 5 business days and includes:

  • confirmation of your details and required documentation supporting your application
  • investigation of your proposed activity

On approval, you will be provided with a permit confirming the approved activity and the conditions.
