Beers Grow on Trees

Bowden Brewing celebrated National Tree Day through sustainable action.

Raising a glass to a greener future

Local businesses, Frigid.Cloud, EverGreen Gardening, and the City of Charles Sturt partnered for National Tree Day 2024, to raise a glass to a greener future. The partnership delivered a unique and impactful event on Sunday, 28 July at Bowden Brewing in Plant 3 Bowden.

The focus of this collaborative effort was to showcase sustainable brewing practices, while giving back to the environment and community. In honour of the day, Bowden Brewing’s limited edition ‘New World Pale Ale’ brew was poured in reusable stainless-steel kegs, eliminating single-use cans and packaging materials.

Sustainable beer production

Throughout the day, attendees learnt about Bowden Brewing's commitment to eco-conscious beer production, including:

·           Locally sourced ingredients: Minimising carbon footprint with local malts, including the environmentally friendly Kernza Malt, local yeast supplier (Ferveo) and special Kviek yeast strain, Barossa Valley hops, and repurposed bread and pastries from Lost Loaf Bakery.

·           Energy-efficient brewing: Utilising Frigid.Cloud's innovative cooling system to optimise energy usage across all tanks, along with special yeast strains that minimise cooling needs.

·           Waste minimisation: Capturing spent grains to cultivate delicious in-house mushroom tacos in collaboration with Westside Mushies and repurposing the remaining substrate as compost for local gardens.

Tree Planting

The celebration went beyond the brew: for each pint purchased on National Tree Day, Bowden Brewing planted a tree in partnership with EverGreen Gardening and the City of Charles Sturt.

This was a collaborative case study celebrating how sustainable practices and make a positive impact on our environment, one delicious pint at a time.
