Gibson Street Streetscape Upgrade

Project Completed

The Gibson Street Upgrade (between Eighth Street and Thirteenth Street) was completed in August 2026.

Gibson Street Upgrade

We’re upgrading Gibson Street (between Eighth Street and Thirteenth Street) in the 2025/26 financial year to improve safety, accessibility and the overall look and feel of the street.

The project includes both road and footpath renewal, as well as new trees and greening improvements.

Key works include:

  • Road, pavement and kerb renewal (where needed)
  • New footpaths using a mix of red clay and grey pavers (DDA compliant)
  • Upgraded kerb ramps to improve accessibility
  • Kerb buildouts at intersections on the northern side to slow traffic
  • New and retained trees based on community feedback

Project Background

Gibson Street has been identified for upgrade as part of Council’s asset renewal program, with works planned between Eighth Street and Thirteenth Street. Many of the road and footpath surfaces are nearing the end of their life, and the street has been prioritised for renewal. In November 2023, Council endorsed a plan that includes:

  • Road, footpath and kerb renewal
  • Kerb buildouts to improve pedestrian safety
  • Road surface print treatment at the intersection of Ninth St & Hawker St intersection
  • Greening and tree planting improvements

A driveway link between Seventh and Eighth Street was also completed earlier as part of the project.

Community feedback from tree planting consultation in August/September 2024 has helped shape the final design.

Previous Consultation

Following community feedback in late 2024, a hybrid planting solution has been developed for Gibson Street.

  • Western side: Keep Bottlebrush trees and add Crepe Myrtles
  • Eastern side: Replace Bottlebrush trees with Crepe Myrtles
  • Larger verges: Plant 13 Chinese Pistachio trees

Overall, this will see 18 trees removed, 38 retained, and up to 54 new trees planted, creating a greener and more diverse street.
