H5 Bird Flu

6 September 2026

H5 bird flu (Avian Influenza) has been detected in South Australia

In support of the Department of Primary Industries and Regions' (PIRSA) response, we encourage our community to remain vigilant.

If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife, do not touch them.

  1. Avoid contact with sick or dead birds and wildlife. Keep pets away
  2. Record what you see. Take photos if you can
  3. Report it to the 24/7 Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888

The risk to human health from H5 bird flu is considered low. Community members do not need to avoid parks, beaches, schools or other public spaces simply because birds are present as per SA Health advice.

Take steps to protect pets and poultry

  • Keep dogs on a lead in public areas, especially when in areas where wildlife is present on the beach and in parks or reserves
  • Prevent cats from roaming to minimise contact with wild birds
  • Keep food and water sources covered or away from wild birds
  • Implement good biosecurity measures to protect backyard poultry

Pets and poultry safety

Possible signs of bird flu in birds include:

  • Multiple sick or dead birds in one location
  • Weakness, inability to stand or fly
  • Neurological signs or abnormal behaviour
  • Swelling or discolouration of the head
  • Respiratory distress
