Funding Boost to Expand Recycled Water Network

14 October 2026

With significant funding support from the Australian Government, the City of Charles Sturt is delivering a $4,656,141 investment to expand our alternative water infrastructure and support greener, more water-secure open spaces.

Delivered through the South Australian Alternative Water Supply Efficiency Measures (AWSEM) Program, the project will extend existing water infrastructure networks to priority open spaces across Charles Sturt.

By increasing access to alternative water sources, including captured stormwater and treated wastewater, the project will reduce demand on potable water and help keep local parks, reserves and sporting ovals green in a drying climate.

Through the rollout across our City, we are expected to save 122 megalitres of potable water.

This grant forms part of more than $32 million in funding shared across six South Australian council projects, which are forecast to deliver up to 1,890 megalitres in total water savings.

The program is funded through the Australian Government’s Resilient Rivers Program and will be delivered by the South Australian Government in partnership with local councils and other stakeholders. Projects funded through the program are expected to be rolled out by the end of 2027.

This investment will strengthen our City’s water resilience, support the long-term health of valued community spaces and contribute to broader efforts to improve environmental outcomes for the River Murray and the Murray–Darling Basin.

The Alternative Water Supply Efficiency Measures (AWSEM) Program is jointly funded by the Australian Government and the South Australian Government through the Resilient Rivers Water Infrastructure Program (RRWIP) in partnership with the City of Charles Sturt.
