Caring for our Coastline

4 June 2026

Severe weather and high tides have caused significant erosion along sections of our coastline in recent days.

Up to five metres of dune have been lost in some areas. Our teams have been on site assessing damage and working to make beach accessways safe.

The most significant impacts include:

  • Point Malcolm to Tennyson – Severe dune scarping, exposure of old fencing infrastructure, and major damage to accessways at Recreation Parade, Sands Way and Third Avenue
  • Tennyson to Grange – Severe dune scarping with accessways affected by drop-offs of up to two metres
  • Grange to Henley Beach – Significant dune erosion exposing old fencing and infrastructure

Some accessways are temporarily closed while repairs are underway. Crews have been removing exposed fencing, posts and wire, and clearing hazards along the shoreline to ensure public safety.

To ensure public safety, several beach accessways have been temporarily closed. Crews are actively working to reopen access points as quickly as possible.

Accessways at Henley South and West Beach remain open, however significant sand loss has exposed sections of the old seawall.

Please stay off the dunes and avoid closed accessways. This helps protect this fragile coastline and keeps our crews safe while they work.

Update (5/6/26): Our teams have been working hard, and all beach accessways have now been reopened, with the exception of Recreation Parade at Semaphore Park. This accessway is expected to remain closed over the weekend.

We know how much this coast means to everyone and will continue to keep our community updated.
