The South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival celebrates South Australia's thriving visual arts community throughout the month of August. This year's program features more than 700 visual art exhibitions and events.

With more than 30 events and exhibits happening across the City of Charles Sturt, we’re proud to spotlight local talent and enrich our community through the power of art.

Here is a small selection of the exhibitions happening in our spaces:

A Symphony of Stories
The Makers Collective | 1–31 August (during opening hours) | Ngutungka Henley

A Symphony of Stories brings together layered, imaginative works created by a diverse range of community members and groups, weaving voices, memories and creativity into a shared, vibrant visual narrative.

Diffuse
Kate FOUNDAS and Desma KASTANOS | 1 August – 1 September (during opening hours) | Hindmarsh Library

Two artists, Aunty and Niece, mentoring each other while responding to the title Diffuse. DesmaKas works in textured poured-paint abstraction, while Kate Foundas works in oils suggesting ethereal landscapes.

There is also an Opening Event on 8 August from 1–3pm.

Unity Housing Artists
1–31 August (during opening hours) | Ngutungka West Lakes

An exhibition featuring artwork by Unity Housing tenants and staff, celebrating diverse talents, lived experiences and creative expression within our community.

Red Rebels Brigade
1–31 August (during opening hours) | Ngutungka West Lakes

A photographic celebration of the Red Rebels Brigade, a group of performance artists. The Red Rebel Brigade is an international performance activist troupe dedicated to highlighting the climate and ecological crises we are experiencing.

The local troupe formed in Adelaide in 2019 and has participated in Extinction Rebellion actions as well as creating its own performances. All Red Rebels actions are lawful and follow existing processes under relevant South Australian legislation.

There's plenty more local art to explore across our City. Other venues hosting exhibitions in our include The Lady Daly Hotel, 94 West, Henley and Grange Arts Society, KG Studio in Croydon, Praxis Artspace in Bowden, and other local art studios and businesses. Visit the SALA Program page and search for City of Charles Sturt.

The City of Charles Sturt also supports local artists through our Arts Fund and a registration subsidy scheme for artists exhibiting in SALA.

We also provide opportunities for artists to showcase their work free of charge in our community spaces.
