There has been growing interest regarding fishing at Freshwater Lake at West Lakes.
Currently, there is no complete fishing ban at Freshwater Lake. The existing By-Law prohibits fishing within 6 metres of the boundaries of any property and has been in place for many years.
Council is currently considering ways to address issues relating to fishing at Freshwater Lake. These include raising awareness of protecting our natural environment, reviewing signage, reviewing ways we patrol the area or changes to By-Laws. We welcome all perspectives regarding the use of public space at Freshwater Lake.
Any changes to By-Laws require community consultation and a government gazettal process which can take time. These By-Laws do not apply to minors.
We have been in close contact with SAPOL and they are aware of the recent issues at Freshwater Lake.
We ask our community to stay safe and remain respectful of each other and our natural environment.
Undesirable behaviour should be reported to SAPOL.
