Mural Month 2025

10 June 2025

Each June we celebrate Mural Month in our city by partnering with a group of incredible artists to bring creativity and colour to a range of public spaces.

Murals do more than beautify, they can reshape the identity of a neighbourhood, deter graffiti, celebrate local stories and culture, highlight environmental themes, and breathe new energy into buildings and streets.

This year’s featured artists include Adam Poole-Mottishaw, Cat Dean, David Stanley, Genevieve Byrt, Jack Fran, Julia Karpathakis, Leah Grant, Simon Cavuoto and Sam Brooks who’ve all contributed to a vibrant collection of new murals across the city.

Explore the murals below and see how each space has been transformed. We also invite you to visit them in person and experience their full impact.

A big thank you to all the artists and community members who helped bring these works to life.

2024/25 Art Grant Recipients:

174 Tapleys Hill Road in Seaton - David Stanley

David is an illustrator and mural artist known for bold, vibrant large-scale works inspired by typography and design.
This artwork is a reminder to focus your energy on the steps you can take now, rather than dwelling on the past.

179 Trimmer Parade in Seaton - Simon Cavuoto

Simon has been an artist for over 35 years, working with a wide variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, spray paint, and specialist finishes like woodgraining. His lifelong passion for art and all things paint-related is reflected in this piece, created in collaboration with the neighbouring church as a tribute to a special individual.

Carnarvon Reserve in West Croydon – Genevieve Byrt aka Gen + Tonic

Gen is a self-taught South Australian artist who brings colour and good vibes to public spaces. She creates murals, art, workshops, and tools to uplift, empower, and make people smile.

The mural pays tribute to the rosella, a bird often spotted around the reserve.

Corcoran Reserve in West Lakes – Genevieve Byrt aka Gen + Tonic

Gen had a ‘ball’ bringing this dull sound wall around a basketball court to life with a vibrant, colourful design that gives a playful, retro nod to the game.

William Street Reserve in West Croydon – Julia Karpathakis

Local artist Julia brings experience in murals, public art, and community projects. She was thrilled to team up with Barneys Church to help turn this space into a vibrant, colourful landmark the community can take pride in.

2024/25 Shop Local Façade Improvement Recipient

Soul Rebel Café in Woodville South - Sam Brooks

Sam’s art blends classical oil techniques with a contemporary style to tell stories of people, place and culture.

This piece features a whimsical design that combines classical and modern elements for a playful yet timeless experience.

Other murals funded by the City of Charles Sturt:

Fawk Reserve in Athol Park - Cat Dean

Cat is a passionate visual artist whose mural design on the toilet block features insects, plants, and helping hands – symbolising care, connection, and ecology. With bold contrasts and vibrant colours, the artwork celebrates garden life and often-overlooked pollinators that sustain it.

Samoa Reserve in West Lakes - Genevieve Byrt aka Gen + Tonic

Gen's favourite yet—a vibrant mix of bold colours and crisp patterns that turn this toilet block into the best wrapped gift in the West.

Corner of Port Road/Queen Street in Hindmarsh - Jack Fran and Leah Grant

Jack was the successful applicant chosen through an Expression of Interest submission. The mural offers moments of surprise and delight for passersby, with subtle references to Queen woven into the design and a thoughtful connection to its surroundings.  Jack also collaborated with Leah Grant to blend their styles and extend the artwork around the corner.
