Accessible Ramp at Point Malcolm Boardwalk Complete

27 May 2024

Semaphore Park beach is now easily accessible to all beach users following the completion of the new composite decking ramp at Point Malcolm Boardwalk. We have worked with the Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club who have been instrumental in advocating for this project as they strived to make the beach accessible to all visitors. Works began in March 2024 and were completed in May 2024.

The new ramp significantly improves connections from the reserve to the beach, offering easier access for everyone, including those living with a disability. This upgrade also supports several key programs run by the Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club:

  • Seabirds Nippers Program: Catering to children with additional needs, many of whom find stairs difficult due to mobility issues or Autism Spectrum Disorder, the ramp provides a safer and more comfortable option for these young participants.
  • Silver Salties Program: Some of the older members have mobility difficulties or struggle with walking on soft sand and the new ramp, alongside the club’s beach mat, ensures they can participate in beach activities with ease.
  • Accessible Beaches Program: The ramp allows people with disabilities to access the beach using the club’s wheelchair fleet and beach mat and offers a suitable alternative to the boat ramp previously used.

This project highlights our commitment to enhancing community connections and continuously seeking ways to improve accessibility and inclusion. We are dedicated to supporting those with disabilities, ensuring they and their carers can fully engage in all aspects of life within our City.
