We are excited to be trialling Weekly Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) collections starting Monday 1 May 2023.
The 12 month trial includes 1,000 households in Seaton and Tennyson moving to a weekly FOGO (green lid) bin collection, and their general waste bin changing to a fortnightly collection.
Our Charles Sturt trial follows the highly successful trials and recent transition to weekly FOGO collections in the City of Holdfast Bay, and aims to support our community to put food scraps into the green lid FOGO bin along with garden waste.
The benefits of a weekly FOGO collection include:
- Increasing food waste recycling rates.
- Reducing associated landfill greenhouse gas emissions.
- Supporting the local circular economy through the processing and return of nutrient rich compost back to South Australian soils.
- Providing an additional 240L capacity for FOGO, which is especially useful for those with larger gardens.
- Reducing associated smell from the FOGO bin by collecting them weekly.
Households in the trial areas will have the opportunity to opt-out of the trial if they do not wish to be part of the environmentally responsible collection service. Participating households will receive support throughout the trial through FOGO education materials, an updated collection calendar, a kitchen caddy with compostable bags and a FOGO bin for households that don’t already have one.
Residents in the trial areas in Seaton and Tennyson will receive a letter in the mail this week.
“We know there is strong interest in our community to take everyday action on climate change”, said Mayor Angela Evans.
“Increasing food waste recycling through weekly FOGO collections provides a simple way for us to support our community to turn this material into nutrient-rich compost and reduces methane gas being generated in landfill.”
Our trial will provide important data on waste diverted from landfill and rates of contamination. This information will provide insights into how a FOGO collection service could be implemented across the City of Charles Sturt in the future.
We thank Green Industries SA for enabling this trial through their funding.
