Dave Glazbrook of Sustainable West showcases the new Recycling Station at Hindmarsh Library

Have you seen the new recycling station based at our Hindmarsh Library?

This uniquely built station is a joint project between Dave Glazbrook of Sustainable West, 19 On Green Community Centre and the City of Charles Sturt.

We know recycling is a practice that our community are very passionate about. We are too, with the battery and mobile collection points proving to be very popular at our libraries and community centres.

Sustainable West, who include residents predominantly from Bowden and Brompton, are going that one step further to help provide multiple collection points and stations across our City. At times it’s not easy to track down what, where and how some of the less common household items can be recycled.

Dave initially worked with 19 on Green to build the first station and after its overwhelming success, the City of Charles Sturt offered a grant so that Dave could establish one at Hindmarsh Library.

You'll now be able to drop off items such as spectacles, spent cosmetics, oral care, pens and markers, cables and connectors, small electronics and even old X-ray films the next time you decide to visit the library.

But what happens to these items when they are recycled?

Our amazing volunteers at Sustainable West take each type of items to their specific recycling organisation:

  • X-ray films are taken to the Red Cross head office in Adelaide where they are able to extract the silver for monetary donations
  • Spectacles and eyes glasses are given to Lions who repair and donate them to worthy groups
  • Pens, markers and used printer cartridges are deposited at Officeworks
  • Oral care products are taken to Bupa Dental outlets but there are future plans to send them off via the Terracycle program
  • Some cosmetic products will also be sent off via Terracycle but others are able to be taken into David Jones
  • All e-waste and electrical items are taken to Electronic Recycling Australia (ERA)

Dave is a big believer in making recycling as easy as possible for people.

"This scheme strives to provide easier avenues to recycle for those who might not have the time or resources to do so on a regular basis. At the same time (we want to) inform and educate our fellow citizens about the necessity for and best methods of recycling", said Dave

Thank you to Dave and Sustainable West. We’re really excited to offer this service at Hindmarsh Library and look forward to more community collaborations to help keep our City clean, sustainable and liveable.
