Celebrating 25 Years of the City of Charles Sturt

5 July 2022

This year we are commemorating a significant chapter in our history as we celebrate the 25 year anniversary of the amalgamation of the former Cities of Hindmarsh, Woodville and Henley and Grange to become the City of Charles Sturt.

A celebratory event was attended by past and present Council members, employees and representatives from many groups across our City. It was an opportunity to meet with former colleagues and share our past history.

Since our proclamation on the 1st of January 1997, we have continued to evolve into a connected and welcoming community. With a population of 120,000 and representation of over 100 different cultures, Charles Sturt is truly a celebration of diversity and cultural richness.

Mayor Angela Evans shared the importance of remembering and celebrating our history, sharing our diverse experience and identifying opportunities to help build our identity.

“As Mayor of the City of Charles Sturt I am proud of our City and the community we have become. We are place for all people, a City where our community feels safe, included, and connected to others. We are a City where we all belong, and this means the world to us.”

For Paul Sutton, CEO, it was a chance to take a trip down memory lane and reflect on some of the great achievements.

“Through this amalgamation, the City of Charles Sturt has become a truly vibrant and diverse City. In my 7 years as CEO, I have witnessed some outstanding achievements and accomplishments, including our huge infrastructure focus designed to build opportunity for future generations”, Paul said.

“We have new sports facilities, a contemporary stormwater solution and a beautiful avenue of green space for Port Road, the Henley and Grange precincts, and the steps to become a green city through our collaboration with the City of Port Adelaide Enfield to build our own Materials Recovery Facility. ”

He also shared his appreciation for our Elected Members, saying:

“This legacy we have is built on having a cohesive, professional and constructive Elected Member body. That is such an important foundation within a community.”

Over the coming months we will look to share more of our stories. You can watch and listen to these reflections via the video playlist below.

Let’s continue to make history.
