South Road Underpass and Path Now Open

12 March 2021

We’re excited to announce that works are now complete along the River Torrens Linear Park (RTLP) path and cycling link adjacent the Hindmarsh Cemetery.

Significant works commenced in April 2020 to reconstruct 250m of the path from under South Road and up to the intersection of River Street and Adam Street, Hindmarsh.

We’ve improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists on the path, significantly widening the path formed by a suspended ‘bridge’ structure on the side of the River Torrens embankment and renewing the connecting path to South Road. Other safety improvements include the installation of:

  • Handrail and balustrading along the river side
  • New lighting
  • A sustainable and durable recycled wood plastic composite decking along the underpass

We encountered many challenges in delivering this project with difficult site access due to the embankment and adjoining roadways, ensuring the sensitive water body and significant trees remain protected throughout construction and ensuring all heritage requirements (working adjacent the cemetery) were met.

There has been strong use identified along the River Torrens Linear Park with 18,285 cyclists recorded in January 2021. We look forward to seeing numbers increase along this key route with these significant improvements to the path and underpass.
