Neuron Mobility, who currently operate e-scooter services as part of the Coastal E-scooter Trial, will be operating a dockless electric bicycle (“e-bike”) bikeshare service in Hindmarsh, Bowden, Brompton, Ridleyton and Ovingham for a trial period until the end of March 2021.
Users will be able to hire and park their bikes in any location (hence the name “dockless”) however are encouraged to park in locations that do not obstruct pedestrian access and in some popular locations where preferred parking areas are designated by pavement stickers and GPS.
The e-bikes offer ‘pedal assist’ which provides a boost to the user’s pedalling to speeds of 25km/h. Once the user stops pedalling, or if the pedalled bicycle reaches a speed of 25km/h, the bike’s motor will cut out (this is a legal requirement of power-assisted bicycles in SA). E-bikes therefore have a longer range than traditional bicycles. The e-bike batteries are charged on 100% renewable electricity in Adelaide.
These bikes will provide sustainable access to the CBD for commuting and recreational trips with a total of 150 e-bikes to be trialed across Adelaide CBD and surrounds.
The Neuron bikes include the following safety features:
- Front and rear drum brakes
- Front and rear lights
- Follow my ride and 000 call features
- GPS and ‘smart technology'
- Helmet lock that requires helmets to be locked to the bike at the end of each trip.
Despite the reduced COVID-19 risks in South Australia, Neuron have dedicated safety ambassadors to sanitise e-bikes, e-scooters and helmets for the safety of riders.
