Have Your Say on the Future of Football Park

1 November 2023
Football Park oval
The land circled in red is defined as Lot 5066 Turner Avenue, West Lakes and is the applicable area represented in both the CLMP and licence request.

Now is a good time to talk about the future recreation and sporting use of Football Park.

We would love your thoughts on two matters currently under consideration by the City of Charles Sturt.
1. Draft Community Land Management Plan for Football Park
This plan sets out how Football Park can be used and managed once the land is vested with Council in the future;

Football Park oval is to be vested with Council on completion of the West development, which is expected to occur as early as 2026. When Football Park is vested with Council, we are proposing that the land be retained as open space and designated as “community land”. Under the Local Government Act 1999 a Community Land Management Plan (CLMP) must be established to set out how the community land can be used, and how it must be managed by Council.

2. A future licence request for Football Park
A proposal from SANFL for a future, non-exclusive licence for use of Football Park at certain times.

The South Australian National Football League (SANFL) currently hold the head-lease with the City of West Torrens for use of Thebarton Oval (transferred from AFL) to run and manage its various programs, particularly its young talent programs.

The SANFL's lease is due to expire in 2031. However, the recent announcement by the Adelaide Football Club (AFC) to explore relocation to Thebarton with the support of the City of West Torrens, could mean that the SANFL will need to vacate the site and secure new premises to ensure the ongoing delivery of their programs.

The SANFL are seeking to relocate back to West Lakes where they were the owner of the site from the mid 1970’s until 2013, subject to approval of the proposed relocation of the AFC to Thebarton Oval.
