Bus stops

You can read our Transport Asset Management Plan for more information about how we're managing these assets.

The bus stop post is managed by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT).

Bus Stops

While Council does not operate the bus services, we are responsible for the bus stop waiting and boarding areas. We have renewed our bus stops in the City of Charles Sturt to be compliant with the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport, therefore meeting our requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

This means they are suitable for people with most levels of accessibility to use. Our bus stops assets include:

  • bus stop waiting and boarding area surface
  • tactile ground surface indicators (TGSIs)
  • lighting
  • seats and bins
  • access paths, manoeuvring areas and passing areas
  • ramps, handrails and grab rails
  • kerb ramps

Bus Shelters

A shelter is not a DDA requirement of a bus stop. Some current bus shelters are owned by Council, some by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT), and some by Claude Outdoor.

Council has previously resolved to no longer provide bus shelters given the bus service is owned and operated by the State Government. The State Government has provided funding for bus shelters in the past, but this funding ended in 2014.

We receive many requests from our community for new shelters and we found during community consultation on our Public Transport Strategy that bus shelters are valued and important for our community.

For this reason, we went to the market for a solution and Council have recently entered into a new contract with an advertising company, Claude Outdoor to provide bus shelters free of charge to our community. The contract will install new shelters and includes maintenance of our existing shelters, in return for advertising revenue on the new and existing shelters. Installing advertising panels is therefore funding new shelters at priority stops throughout the City of Charles Sturt. New shelters will be installed under this contract between 2023-2026.

The number of new bus shelters we will receive depends on the number of advertising panels that can be installed on our existing shelters. As we have over 580 bus stops, Council resolved to prioritise the bus stops with more than 15 passengers boarding per day. If a bus stop has more than 15 passengers boarding, it meets our passenger warrant, and has been placed on our priority list for the contractor to consider a new shelter.
