Following the completion of the assessment process, the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP) has approved the development application of a sand pipeline to help replenish our City’s southern, more vulnerable beaches, West Beach and Henley South, with the works driven by the State Government and to be completed by the Department of Environment and Water.

The new 10km underground recycling pipeline will be built from the Semaphore South breakwater to West Beach and - whilst it is not a Council project - provides a long term solution to keeping sand on our most exposed beaches for future generations to enjoy.

The pipeline will allow a lot more flexibility around where the sand is picked up from, collecting from the areas where the sand is accumulating and delivering to the areas which need it the most. It will also reduce the use of trucks along the beach, resulting in a better solution for the environment, improve the safety of beach users and reduce noise and congestion.

Best practice construction techniques will be employed to minimise disruption to the community and environment at key sites, including Henley Square and the River Torrens outlet. Open trenching will not be required in these areas.

Following a design and approval phase, the State Government will commence works in 2022 scheduled for completion by mid-2023. For further information about the project visit the Department of Environment and Water website.
