West Beach Road Project

West Beach Road Streetscape Upgrade

The cities of West Torrens and Charles Sturt have been working in collaboration with West Beach Parks, Adelaide Airport and local residents to develop a concept for the upgrade of West Beach Road between Military Road and Tapleys Hill Road.

West Beach Road is an important gateway to our City that provides a key role in facilitating access between Adelaide Airport, Harbour Town Precinct, West Beach Parks precinct (previously Adelaide Shores) and the western coastal area and suburbs.

Since 2013, this project has undergone an extensive public consultation strategy involving the City of Charles Sturt and the City of West Torrens, West Beach Parks, Adelaide Airport Limited and the West Beach Community Reference Group (CRG).

Project Cost

We have since been successful in receiving grant funding of $1.93 million from the Federal Government under the Roads to Recovery and Special Local Roads programs for the upgrade. Both Councils have also committed to contributing towards the delivery of the project. The Estimated total project cost is $6 million.

Concept Plan

The plan includes a tree-lined centre median island, a wide landscaped southern verge including a shared path, on-road bicycle lanes, a parking lane on the northern side, indented bus stops, pedestrian crossing points and upgraded street lighting.

This layout was developed with help from the community of the West Beach area (including the West Beach Road Reference Group), West Beach Parks s and Adelaide Airport Limited. The use of sustainable LED lighting has also been incorporated into the design.

The new road layout will help to improve safety for all users of this important road, which provides access to tourism and sporting events in the West Beach Precinct.
