Councils Combine to Protect Coast

26 June 2020

City of Charles Sturt has joined forces with City of Port Adelaide Enfield to help rejuvenate and protect sand dunes at Semaphore South.

Our Council was recommended by the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) to lend our expertise and assist the City of Port Adelaide Enfield with the installation of sand drift net fencing as part of the project.

Fencing is currently being installed across approximately a one kilometre stretch of the Semaphore South beach which has proven vulnerable to erosion and flooding in the foreshore area.

The dunes will then undergo revegetation to stabilise the sand and complement the completed fencing works, with a sprinkler irrigation system to nurture plant growth and also help reduce wind-blown sand movement.

The collaboration continues the strong relationship between Charles Sturt and our neighbours at Port Adelaide Enfield and both councils’ shared commitment to protecting our local coastline.

The dune restoration stage of the project is expected to be completed by the end of July 2020. The beach remains open to the public throughout these works.
