Join Elizabeth Williamson and Hayley Morton on a guided walking tour departing from the Cheltenham Community Centre foyer area and returning for morning tea.
Along the way, take the opportunity to marvel at wonderful stobie pole art piece installations and the stories behind them like that of inspiring local survivor of domestic violence, Sarah Francisco (1839 – 1916); a reformed, formerly notorious Adelaide Gaol inmate first convicted in 1872 and going on to garner over 295 convictions over the course of her life for various offence including drunkenness, indecent/abusive language, assault, resisting police, riotous behaviour and disturbing the peace.
Sarah Francisco raised her two children alone, after her abusive husband who made repeated attempts at her life, left the family to fend for themselves. Sheworked whatever job she could, often carrying the smallest child on her back at the very early hours in the morning to get to work on time. Sarah's drinking problem began after the loss of one of her children and later in life, she gave up drinking and joined The Salvation Army.
Bookings are essential.
