Josiah Mitton Prize

Josiah Mitton Prize 2018

The Josiah Mitton Prize is offered to the most outstanding or best "all round" student in all primary and high schools in the City of Charles Sturt.

Josiah Mitton was one of the first elected Councillors of the Corporation of the Town of Hindmarsh and its third Mayor (1878-1880). He participated actively in local affairs and in the Hindmarsh Institute Library, which was formed between 1852 and 1855. On his death a bequest of over 50 Pounds was presented to the library to set up a library scholarship for school children. The Josiah Mitton Prize was initially presented annually to a student from each school in the Hindmarsh area to perpetuate the memory of the Josiah Mitton Scholarship to the Hindmarsh District Library and Mechanics Institute.

When libraries became a free service the scholarship became irrelevant and an annual book prize was introduced and has been awarded annually by the City of Charles Sturt ever since.

Josiah Mitton Prize ceremony will be held at the Woodville Town Hall on Friday 2 November 2018.
