Citizenship Ceremonies

Becoming an Australian Citizen is a very special event. At the City of Charles Sturt, we hold conferral ceremonies for approved Australian Citizenship applicants living in the council area. If you are accepted as a Citizen of Australia, you will make a pledge and receive your Citizenship Certificate.

The City of Charles Sturt hosts 5 ceremonies a year, aligning with significant dates as identified by the Department of Home Affairs. These dates include events such as Harmony Week and Citizenship Day.

Our next citizenship ceremonies will be held on:

Tuesday, 18 June 2024 - 6.00pm - Woodville Town Hall

Tuesday, 3 September 2024 - 6.00pm - Woodville Town Hall

Tuesday, 19 November 2024 - 6.00pm - Woodville Town Hall

Please note that dates and locations are subject to change.

Approved applicants will be allocated a citizenship ceremony by the Department of Home Affairs. Candidates will receive an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs approximately 4 weeks before a citizenship ceremony inviting them to attend and confirming the event details.

Requests for urgent attendance at a ceremony must be directed to the Department of Home Affairs on 131 880. Council cannot grant approval for attendance at a ceremony, this must be authorised by the Department of Home Affairs.

Frequently asked questions

Ceremonies are allocated by the Department of Home Affairs and invitations sent out approximately 4 weeks prior. Please contact them on 131 880 to discuss your attendance at an upcoming ceremony.

Citizenship ceremonies are formal occasions that take approximately 1.5 – 2 hours depending on the number of candidates in attendance. Candidates will be required for provide a form of photo identification (e.g., passport, driver’s license) on the night. During the ceremony, candidates will be asked to make a pledge of commitment to receive their citizenship.

The Presiding Officer, Her Worship the Mayor, will conduct the ceremony with Federal and State Members of Parliament, guest speakers and City of Charles Sturt Councillors often in attendance at the ceremony.

At the conclusion of the ceremony there will be an opportunity for candidates to have their photo taken with Her Worship the Mayor.

Guests are limited to 2 per candidate (e.g., a family of four candidates can bring 8 guests, a single candidate can bring 2 guests) as Council is maximising space for candidates at the ceremony.

Photos are taken by Council’s photographer and edited in the weeks following the ceremony. The photos will be posted out to candidates at the address provided on their citizenship application.

Please allow approximately 6 weeks for this process to take place.
