Charles Sturt remembers WWI

In the evening of 24 April 1915, Bertie Stokes of Henley Beach wrote: “We are now on the way to the Ds and are landing there tonight. It will be a hard business for us all… You will know all about it long before you receive this and it will all be now history made... We are all confident in ourselves & proud too....” Within two days Bertie was dead, killed in action in a conflict that is now upheld as a pinnacle moment in Australia’s journey of nationhood and national identity. Bertie’s WWI experience is told via a poignant collection of extracts taken from his letters home and now available to our community through the specially created website www.ww1.charlessturtremembers.com.au
