Charles Sturt Library App - Pilot Project Facts

Interacting with the App

The Library App has been designed to provide a quick and easy way to access library information. Whether it is information about an art exhibition, a technology training session or suggestions around what to read next, all of this information and more is in the palm of your hand.

Onsite at the Civic Library at Woodville

The Library App will offer ‘real time’ messages through the ‘Near me now’ function when in proximity to an iBeacon. Beacons have been placed throughout the Civic Library floor plan and when your device is in lock screen, push notifications will be delivered. Have fun discovering where the beacons are and accessing information about your library service!

Interested in joining the Pilot Project - What do I need ?

Participants will need to have access to an Apple iOS 7 device. These devices are iPhone 4S and later, iPad (3rd generation) and later, iPad Mini (1st generation) and later, iPod Touch (5th generation), have a personal iTunes account and be willing to be contacted for feedback. Regular visits to the Civic Library at Woodville during the trial period will be ideal as this will enable the full functionality of the Library App to be tested.

Trial Duration

Trial Feedback Survey

What is the Civic Library iBeacon Trial?

The City of Charles Sturt Civic Library is the first Library in Australia to trial iBeacon technology aimed to enhance the customer experience and interaction, and encourage increased participation in the library and its events. The trial will provide us with feedback on the value of this technology in delivering this goal.

What is iBeacon?

iBeacon is Apple’s implementation of Bluetooth low‐energy (BLE) wireless technology to create a different way of providing location-based information and services to iPhones and other iOS devices.

How does it work?

The beacons themselves are small Bluetooth transmitters. Apps installed on your iOS device listen out for the signal transmitted by these beacons and respond accordingly when the iOS device comes into range.

Within the Civic Library, a number of iBeacons have been placed within zones to provide you with information about the zone within a set proximity.

Does an iBeacon deliver content?

iBeacons don’t actually transmit content - they transmit a UUID, enabling apps to retrieve and surface location-relevant content.

UUID - A UUID (Universal Unique Identifier) is a 128‐bit number used to uniquely identify some object or entity on the Internet.

iBeacon compatible devices

iBeacon arrived in iOS7 and for the purpose of the trial, Apple iOS devices with Bluetooth 4.0 are supported. These devices are iPhone 4S and later, iPad (3rd generation) and later, iPad Mini (1st generation) and later, iPod Touch (5th generation).

iBeacon is invented by Apple, but since it is based on BLE, it can be supported by other vendors or operating systems such as Android. For the trial, the technology is limited to iOS devices.
