Troubleshooting Problems Viewing PDF Files

If the Adobe Reader doesn't display PDF files inside your Web browser as expected, try the following:

Checklist
  • Check the version of Adobe Reader - Some PDF's use security features that may not run in older versions - it is always best that you have the latest version.
  • Check to see if your system has two versions of Adobe Reader, uninstall both the versions and then install the latest version.
  • Open Adobe Reader and click Edit, Preferences. Choose Internet in the Preferences window. Uncheck Display PDF in browser option and close the dialog. Repeat the same and this time, enable the Display PDF in browser option.
Solutions
  • If your PDFs aren't displaying (ie: all you get is a blank screen) you can try using the mouse click on the Refresh or Reload button located in your web browser's toolbar.
  • If your PDFs aren't displaying (ie: all you get is a blank screen) you can try using the mouse click on the Back button in your web browser's toolbar. Once the page has finished loading, click on the Forward button in your browser's toolbar to reload the PDF.
  • If the text in the PDF you are viewing is too small to read you can zoom in on the page using the Zoom tool located in Adobe Reader toolbar of your web browser.
  • If when trying to view a PDF you get the message 'The page cannot be found' or 'Error 404' the link could be broken. Send us a message to let us know.
  • If your browser starts to download the article, but stops before it finishes, it could be caused by your computer running out of memory while trying to download the PDF file. You can try closing down other programs running on your computer at the same time.
  • Try right clicking on the link and choose Save As to download the PDF to your computer and then double click on it to open it with Adobe Reader.
