To assist our creative community recover from COVID-19, Place Makers grant funding has been reallocated to an Arts and Cultural Support and Stimulus package from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021. The funding supports local Arts organisations, Artists and musicians develop new opportunities to connect with local audiences.
Westside Place Makers is a grant program to fund projects in Charles Sturt’s public spaces that:
- contribute to the Council’s vision for place making
- can be easily implemented
- have high impact
Through grants, we're giving the community the chance to transform our public spaces. The program allows local people to lead the change they want to see in their local area.
A Place Makers grant is a great opportunity to try out a good idea that may lead to a more permanent project. We encourage applications for projects that enliven local main streets and retail strips. We invite initiatives that produce economic outcomes.
Anyone with a great, workable idea can apply for this grant, including:
- individuals
- groups or teams
- families, mums and dads
- neighbours and friends
- business heads
- creative types with small enterprises
- schools or groups of students

- festivals & markets
- skill sharing workshops & interactive activities
- walking apps and history tours
- little libraries
- temporary or permanent art in the public space
- community gardens
- laneway transformations
The total grant pool is $40,000, allocated in two rounds of $20,000. While there is no limit on how much funding can be applied for, we hope to support as many projects as possible. Applications must be for a minimum of $500.
Two rounds of funding are provided each financial year, opening in July and January.
Each round is open for approximately 4-6 weeks.
Funding proposals will be assessed on their merits against the eligibility and assessment criteria by a panel of Charles Sturt staff. Even if a proposal meets all of the eligibility criteria, it may not automatically be funded.
Eligibility criteria includes (but is not limited to) things like:
- consistency with the overall aims of our Place Making Framework
- projects in priority areas like Hindmarsh, Woodville Road and Henley Square
- projects that benefit the community and businesses
In your proposal you should include:
- what you plan to do
- where you plan to undertake your project
- why you think the project is a good idea
- how you will undertake the project
- what it will involve
- who will be involved
- what the benefits of the project are, including outcomes for the community
- when you will undertake your project and how long it will run for
- how much money you will need (include a budget breakdown, including total project expenses and quotes, and the cost of your time to deliver the project)
- if you have any other funding or in-kind support
- evidence of permissions from relevant property owners
- letters of support from people involved or impacted by the project
- any examples of successful similar ideas in other places
Important: you must tell us how your project aligns with the eligibility and assessment criteria, including the City of Charles Sturt Place Making Framework principles.
